Tune into Natures Talk Show Fine Art of Paleontology serirs will be discussing the Paleocene of the San Juan Basin.Located in the Four Corners Area, the San Juan Basin covers most of the northwest corner of New Mexico and into part of Colorado. This basin is one of several that were formed during the Laramide Orogeny and is well known geologically for the preservation of the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary as well as the many fossils preserved on both sides of the boundary. Though large parts of the San Juan Basin are vegetated, the area also contains vast tracts of badland exposures that record the various depositional environments on the western side of the Cretaceous-aged Western Interior Seaway. As the shoreline of the seaway retreated eastward thick accumulations of fluvial and lacustrine sediments were deposited.
