Electronics Could Soon Source Elements From U.S. Coal, Not China
Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are used in most popular electronics these days, including computers and smartphones. Currently China produces 85 percent of REEs on Earth. A new study says it may soon be possible to extract them cleanly and inexpensively from U.S. coal, lowering dependence on REEs from outside the country.
